  •  Actually the SA-8 is a defensive system (7+ / 0-)

The SA-8 is not an offensive weapon; it is designed to provide short-ranged air defense.  That being said, it can be used to protect offensive weapons from air attack and Israel pretty jealously guards its air superiority, so it is understandable why it might want to destroy these weapons.

    •  SA-8 as a MILITARY weapon is defensive, (1+ / 0-)

as a means of terrorizing commercial air traffic. Its pretty clearly offensive.

    •  Depends on who's holding it/ (1+ / 0-)

It's also farily good for attacking airliners, and Mideastern airspace is pretty crowded.

That would hardly be anyone's first choice for attacking an airliner.

Its range is too short to project into Israeli airspace but it's much too large to smuggle in somewhere. You'd practically have to drive it onto the airport.

It's mounted on a large vehicle and is radar guided so it's going to announce its presence as soon as it starts to transmit.

It's purely a point-defense weapon. It was designed to travel with Soviet armored formations to protect them from tactical aircraft.

I've had one of these things shot at me - I know how they work.

If the pilot's good, see, I mean if he's reeeally sharp, he can barrel that baby in so low... oh you oughta see it sometime. It's a sight. A big plane like a '52... varrrooom! Its jet exhaust... frying chickens in the barnyard!
