    home to Fort Jackson, one of the Army's main training centers, in the 60s and 70s. What was interesting was, I don't recall any "whites only" signs or other visible signs of segregation. Not that there wasn't a lot of segregation and racism, but it was not overt and institutionalized. (At least so far as I recall.) I have always wondered if that was by quiet agreement between the DOD and city/state government: That Fort was extremely valuable to the city; at night, the town crawled with soldiers on leave; many civilian residents had jobs on base. The DOD has a lot of power to make life pleasant for its men and women in uniform.
