      The dude obviously has other income.  Why is that irrelevant?  Without that info, the $21 number is meaningless.  Even less meaningful than the existing content of the diary.

        If someone qualifies for food stamps, it probably makes up a rather large chunk of their income, once you take out housing, electric, heating, and transportation costs.  When you make that little money, losing even $20 can be a financial disaster with repercussions that last beyond that month.

          In this case, if he is only getting $21/mo, that almost surely means he has an income of over $1,000/mo.  That ain't much, and every dollar surely counts, but we're talking about a few % of his monthly income.  It's not assumed he can eat on that--that's the amount he gets to supplement his income for food.  Shouldn't the level of outrage show some proportion to the actual outrage?
