    Pennies for the poor does sound kind of like the 1% policy.  And I would do this, I have pounds of pennies.  As long as I didn't have to roll them first :-)

      and give you paper money.  Bank should do this at no charge; grocery stores also have these machines, but a fee is taken out.

      btw -- how many pennies in a pound? (by weight, not the British coin system).

      In my  county, the Food Bank asks the various agency that distribute food to pay $.14 per pound of food (although that 14-cent figure may be a couple of years old).  One of the main food outlets still says (on their website) that a $1 donation provides 10 pounds of food to distribute.  So these numbers don't quite agree.  But still, even if the cost per pound for Food Bank food is 15-20 cents, that's still a handsome return.
