    about the gouging by insurance companies without the wind being knocked out of me a bit.  The idea of being happy to be paying "only" $12,000 a year is incomprehensible, esp. since there are, I assume, co-pays and deductibles on top of that.  

    Single payer looks like it ain't gonna happen for a long time but it seems to me that it might be possible to rein in the insurance companies.  They basically transfer money from one group to another with practically no risk to themselves.  They should be treated like utilities and their allowable profit margins (to say nothing of their administrative costs) should be cut drastically.
