  •  What was the Name of the International Group? (4+ / 0-)

It would be nice if it were connected with the IPCC or some other body with international stature, but at this point, The Human Race is the only international organization that can prevent catastrophic global climate change.

People everywhere get it, even American industrial workers who drive to work and watch cable tv news and sports.

The grass roots groups like Tar Sands Blockade and Rising Tide have the right idea:  Popular Groundswell immediately.  But we need alternative behavior models that people can step into, or they won't step out of the fossil  fuel consumption model.

That's the challenge I'm struggling with:  living a reduced carbon life.

I need to convert to wind and solar, get a hybrid or bio-diesel car, plant trees, and focus on protecting my local area and region from the ravages of industrial civilization.

Last week I went to the EPA Public Listening Session proposing greenhouse gas restrictions on existing coal-fired power plants.  It was encouraging.  Obama's EPA wants to move forward, and they're listening to the people.

But we're going to have to ramp it up to the intensity of Occupy, with everybody living it and showing up to and participating in Assemblies every night.

There're billions of us on this planet.  It's got to be a high intensity, focused mass-movement or we're going to miss the cut-off, if we haven't already.

But how do we convince the man on the street, Joe Sixpack, that he's got to drop everything and  adopt this cause like a zealot?

It's only if we start living out this alternative that other people around us will be able to jump aboard.  It's the End Climate Change So We Can Save The Earth Before It's Too Late Emergency Lifestyle.

It's especially challenging for us because we have such comfortable, materialistic lifestyles.  I do.  But I'm realizing that we have to mobilize everybody into dismantling that industrial infrastructure now.

    •  there´s no popular groundswell (1+ / 0-)
      Recommended by:

clamoring for higher carbon (e. g. gas) prices, less cheap food in the supermarkets, less cheap imported goods

the required change can only either come by messaging
"from above" , or by the effects of impoversihment of the people.

its kind of like workers that are faced with the bankrupty of their factory unless they agree to a lowering of their wages. It´s beyond naive to expect that "a groundswell" of workers would voluntarily give up that money. It needs to be explained, discussed and crossdiscussed in organized fashion through their union and management, and eventually implemented in organized, compulsory form. Otherwise its not going to happen (unless through the actual bankrupty).

Similarly - most serious decarbonising plans include up to 50% of the emission reductiosn through attacking and eliminating ubiquitous wastes and inefficiences. "the common people" are largely completely ignorant of where those even arise. Since private interests dont do it, only organized government can enforce this emissions reduction through regulatory laws. "Citizens" cant do that.
