They need to know how to plant and tend and preserve food from their own gardens and fruit-bearing trees and bushes, including the ones that still grow wild.

Cities will fare worse than people who live in the country and know how to grow their own food, be it fruits, veggies, or raising a calf, pig, chickens, etc., to butcher in the fall and put in food freezers.  City kids barely know milk and eggs come from farms, let alone how to milk a cow or get fresh eggs in the chicken coop.

One of my uncles said that as far north as we lived the '30s dust bowl and drought didn't do much harm.  They still raised their own gardens, their mothers (with the help of the older kids) canned veggies, fruits, meats (in lieu of big home freezers that didn't exist yet).  Uncle said they ate very well.

However, making money was still difficult, so they were poor when it came to money.  He said he worked for a quarter a week, plus room and board as a farm laborer.

So, even if people are financially poor, they can still eat if they know how to grow and raise and preserve their own food.

I'm sick of attempts to steer this nation from principles evolved in The Age of Reason to hallucinations derived from illiterate herdsmen. ~ Crashing Vor
