    ...could save the day.  But I think the species would rather die than conquer its own biology.

      and consumes 25% of its oil. It's not absolute population size that is the problem, but the fact that certain populations are horribly wasteful in their use of resources.

      Problem is we've got China and India wanting to emulate the American way of lavish, conspicuous consumption. And if they succeed, there is no turning back for the climate.

      So now we have to play the role of Saul having a revelation and becoming Paul on the road to Damascus, and tell them that even though we partied hearty and guzzled fossil fuels like there was no tomorrow, now that we are all enlightened about climate change, they can't follow our example. That's going to cause a little friction, I think.

      It would be an unprecedented aberration for a species to conquer its own biology. Populations explode when they encounter energy sources, then when they grow too big there's a mass die-off. Something will precipitate it--most likely a pandemic (it's happened before). But it will happen, and that will check the metastatic growth of the human species.
