  •  Would you know about photographers w MacArthur (5+ / 0-)

and not just directly 'with' MacA, but more broadly in his invasion force?  And is there a way of attributing photos to the men who took them?

My Dad was a photographer with MacArthur on the 'return', and was in Manila  when it was taken.  (He had figured out a way to get a message home to tell Mom he was safe:  Postcards weren't censored, and he sent a 'wish you were here' card to Mom, with the word 'Free' written above the card's printed-on postage mark.  That was their agreed-upon signal to let her know that the city was free and he was safe.  I still have the card.)

Even though there must have been a number of photographers there, when I see pics from that time I always wonder if Dad took that shot.

(And no need to answer the questions in my first paragraph now, other that a quick yes or no.  If yes, we can talk about it later, after you've recovered.  And the rest is just chat.)

incredibly stubborn at times - I wonder where THAT comes from?) is a student of World War Two history. Those who assert that MacArthur only came ashore ONCE are incorrect, as I have seen at least two images where the composition of the individuals around him, as he wades through the surf, are radically different.

The National Archives are an excellent resource, of course,

The really good news is that sometimes individual photographers are KNOWN.....(see below)

Pictures are listed by subject and campaign. Original captions are in quotation marks. Photographers, artists, locations, and dates, when known, are also included. This information is followed by identification numbers in italics.
      I wish you luck!  :)
