  •  It was an interesting experience. The City, (5+ / 0-)

    a few years earlier, had sold the community on voting support for a new, larger (and very nice) library and promised to sell the 1910 Carnegie to help defray expenses.

    The Art folks were renting the building for a pittance. Residents felt the building was worth more than the proposed parking lot, so we printed the petitions and carried them (a straw vote with no legal standing.) Took them to City Council, spoke for saving the building, turned in our petitions.

    The Council conferred, smiled, and said they were happy to turn the building over to the Ass'n to be run as a non-profit Art Center. It was my first (and far from last!) experience with community activism!
