  •  There but for the legislature of Minnesota (2+ / 0-)

We are lucky enough to live in Minnesota and got married in September after 23 years together.   I'm a public employee lucky enough (in this day and age) to have a pension coming.  Before September, if I had died before retirement, my partner wouldn't have received survivor benefits, now my husband would.   There is a peace of mind there that straight couples have taken for granted.

This interim situation must go away as quickly as possible.  When we visit our Minnesota, Iowa, California and New Jersey relatives, we are married.  When we visit our Wisconsin, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Missouri relatives, we are not.  It appears we do become civil unitees or something in Illinois.  Please get some case to the SCOTUS and get another Kennedy opinion so we don't have more heartbreking stories like this one.
