    And my rates, for employer+spouse, are going from $1,050/month (silver equivalent) to $650/month if I go with the same insurer on a GOLD plan, or $450/month if I choose the bronze plan.

    Again, same insurer. So I guess it depends on the state and the plan. I don't know what you had before for $500 - I haven't had rates that low in many years.  Did you go onto the exchange for the new rates?

    Also, for self-employed people in businesses where their income can swing wildly in one direction or the other, PPACA offers protection in the bad years.

    But yes, if your situation remains as you described, that a helluva hit.

      That is a very positive outcome for you and I'm thrilled. My old plan had a fairly high deductible but provided pretty good coverage -- not junk insurance, for sure.
      But your good luck kind of makes my point -- what kind of law creates arbitrary winners and losers based on where you live, or whether your state created its own exchange, or how much money you make, or whether you are self-employed or not? The more I think about the ACA and delve into its realities, the crazier it all seems.
