I'd agree that he should've just fessed up ( politicians of any stripe never do, but he should have.)

But so what? He smoked crack. It's a drug like any other.

Obviously, nobody wants a 24/7 pipehead in a position of authority, but Mr. Ford sure doesn't look like a 24/7 pipehead. (If nothing else, they run thin.)

So he likes to toast a little rock of a Friday night. Really not that different than having a few drinks.

And frankly, it's not just the crack smoking.

He's been under police investigation for months now - and surveillance reveals that a great deal of the time when he's claimed he was out visiting constituents he was instead driving around and meeting his drug dealer and drinking in city parks.

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy... the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

    •  Did you listen to his response to reporters? (5+ / 0-)

He said that he smoked it while in a drunken stupor.  Apparently these events of drunken stupor happen often enough for him not to remember when precisely the non-addictive crack smoking took place.

It is my opinion that someone at that level of substance abuse, whether alcohol or otherwise, should not occupy the sensitive post of mayor of a major city.

        ...and hardly the first one.

If abuse of alcohol or any other drug disqualifies from office, well,... We've got a lot of work to do.

If a major emergency happens in my city, my state, or my country, I want to be relatively assured that my Mayor, Governor, or President isn't incapacitated because of some substance, particularly an illegal one.

            particularly an illegal one
            ,

that really doesn't make a difference. That's just a cultural prejudice that says some chemicals are morally superior to other chemicals. We all freak out when we hear the word "crack" because, ya know, scary black people- even though the average crack user is white.

Seriously, ask some folks who do substance abuse rehab for a living- People end up completely screwed up all the time on alcohol, or on pills that they have a script for. Perfectly legal.

But in terms of damage to user and those around them, every bit as bad as crack, or meth, or whatever the scary drug du jour is. ( Is it still bath salts, or have we moved on to being scared of n-Bombs?)

And again, anecdotally, I'd much rather deal with the crackheads than the drunks. The drunks are stupid, and violent. The crackheads are just tweeked. And an hour after they stop, the crackheads aren't high anymore. Serious drinkers are buzzed or hung over 24/7.
