View Diary: Republicans even stupider than imagined, disenfranchise own voters (143 comments)

  •  Two things about this (0+ / 0-)

    1) This hoisted-by-their-own-petard thing only works (sic) if the voter ID laws are uniformly enforced.  You can certainly imagine a situation in which the intended black/brown/young targets get the law's full weight, while the elderly and married-female population gets a wink and a nod.  The key person here is the Democratic poll officer; it's up to him or her to make sure that, if there's a law like this in effect, it hits everyone equally with no allowance for "I know him/her, let them through."

2)Kos's numbers are even worse for Republicans than face value; thanks to socioeconomic/racial segregation and gerrymandering, minority voters are locked-up in solidly Democratic districts for the most part, while the elderly and female-married are everywhere, including swing districts.  Questions of justice aside, if you can do that thought experiment, Democrats are always better off disenfranchising some solidly-Blue voters in districts we'll win or lose just the same, in return for disenfranchising even mildly Red-leaning voters in closely-divided districts.

You know, I sometimes think if I could see, I'd be kicking a lot of ass. -Stevie Wonder at the Glastonbury Festival, 2010
