  •  How does EW Jackson get 45%? (12+ / 0-)

What the hell kind of country are we, when he can still get 45% of the vote? Sometimes I think the GOP tactic is to so completely discredit the idea of representative democracy that those who they can't disenfranchise will just say "what the hell" and give up. We have to fight that. I'm glad the governor and lt governor races are going our way, but why the hell was it this close? And would the cooch have won, had there not been a libertarian spoiler in the race?

    •  Easy (6+ / 0-)

Having lived in VA for a decade you realize that it's a state that still is God and Guns. The Tea Party is prevalent around here and probably will stay that way for a while.

That is precisely what the Republicans and Tea Party Terrorists (which is specifically why I so call them) want. I'd love to see the DoJ investigate any voter suppression in VA, but with that number, it would be really terrible if it were proven that an overwhelming majority of those voters had dem voting histories.

    •  Again, no. This has been explained many times (5+ / 0-)

Sarvis took from both sides. There was a large protest vote who didn't either want to vote for the Cooch or for T-Mac.

As for Jackson, I'm not surprised, since this race was pretty much on auto-pilot since he got the nod. No one expected him to win and that allows for a closer race.

Hell, even Romney getting 47% is obscene.

We're toast, heading for the event horizon. How we emerge on the other side is anyone's guess.

      Enjoy the show.

      •  Yep we're fucking toast (7+ / 0-)

We just won an unprecedented election in a state which was beat red a few election cycles with a crappy candidate.  We even picked up a few seats down ballot.  We won big mayoral races in even beater red NC and in FL.   We elected a guy who promised to raise taxes on the rich in NYC.  The first time in 20 years that a Democrat has won there.  We won other races including local ones where the Koch Brothers dropped serious coin.

        But we're fucking toast nonetheless.

We barely squeak out victories against nut bags, even in light of their damaging shut down and almost collapsing the economy with a default?

The electorate is stupid. We're a dumb nation.

          •  Again see 2005, 2001 (0+ / 0-)

You're talking about a state that a mere 8-12 years ago was beat red and had at one point elected Macaca Allen as Governor.

The electorate may be stupid but there are decidedly LESS of the stupid ones than there are the not so stupid.  The fact that a shitty Dem was able to beat back a hard core tea bagging nut sack of a conservative in what was a formerly red state is a positive sign to me.  Had the Dems nominated someone who was better this wouldn't have even been close.

The fact remains that despite the severe GOP gerrymanders, despite the voter purges, despite the massive amounts of dark money entering the race and despite the large amount of nation GOP pols campaigning for the Cooch, he STILL got his fucking ass kicked and the Dems STILL managed to pick up a few seats.

Take solace in that rather than Mehing it.  It just means that they're at the end of the line.  They can't cheat enough to even beat a crappy Dem.  That means that the tide has turned and eventually it will wash them completely out of power in what was once beat red Virginia.  If that is happening there, then that means the national trend isn't too far off either.

      •  I can't accept that we are toast (0+ / 0-)

And we need to keep up the fight.

But if all the assholes in this country could fly, you would never see the sun.
