    He escaped only narrowly IMO because of the same vulnerabilities he always had:  lack of any record of public service, and a perception of poor personal character.

    Those were always big vulnerabilities, and I think some voters walked in today and just decided they can't vote for him.

    Also turnout wasn't quite what some smart people like Michael McDonald and Larry Sabato projected.  They were saying 2.2M or 2.3M.  Mitch Stewart was in charge of OFA Virginia in 2008 and also projected 2.2M.  But it looks like it will be 2.1M.  I suspect that's disproportionately Dem-leaners who stayed home per those expectations.
