    WRT food: how long before we are assailed for not caring if the world starves?

      People have been pointing out for a while that a lot of the funds we use to buy food from American companies and ship it elsewhere could be better utilized supporting local agriculture. Not the funds that go to relieving acute famine, but the funds that go to countries where the issue is that acres under any sort of production is too low to feed much more than the farmers and them poorly.

      And when the locals are growing the crops the food aid comes from, there's a lot lower chance of ending up with food aid the local government won't accept (as has happened with GMO grain at least once) or that will disrupt the local food economy further (which has also happened in some cases).
