of classic movies are abject failures. They were done right the first time, that is what makes them classics.

I really don't want to see "Roots" remade from the Neo-Confederate, revisionist history point of view.

    •  I dislike them intensely. (0+ / 0-)

I can't remember one remake that came even close to the original in terms of quality. I'm sure there is one, but I can't recall seeing it.

only a few were as good as the originals. The Addams Family comes immediately to mind. Raul Julia, Angelica Huston and Christopher Lloyd were brilliant!

        •  I'll give ya that one, although it isn't a movie (0+ / 0-)

remake.  I did enjoy those, for exactly the reason you mention.  The Get Smart remake wasn't too bad either.  Course I like Steve Carell.  Movie remakes are my bugaboo here, though.

off the top of my head that was as good as the original, and that is Mel Brooke's remake of Jack Benny's "To Be, or Not Be".

            •  Not quite as good, but just fine (0+ / 0-)

The Magnificent Seven, maybe.  I liked Seven Samurai just fine, but The Magnificent Seven fit our culture better. Plus the cast was great.

The Godzilla remake was watchable, but the kitsch of the original was hard to match.

pucklady brought up Ocean's Eleven, but I can't speak to that since I haven't seen the original.

Maybe You've Got Mail (remade from the Shop around the Corner) because of casting, although Jimmy Stewart or Tom Hanks?  Six of one, half a dozen of the other....

I'm sure there were others that were ok. It'd make an interesting diary.

I think the remake is much better than the original.
