  •  I wasn't talking about his winning (0+ / 0-)

Which was a given. I was talking about turnout. It's never good when it's low, even if you win. Doesn't appear to have hurt anyone but it's not a good thing. We're going to need every vote we can get next year or else the progressive agenda will remain on hold.

Are you a New Yorker?  I've been here 17 years, and my sense of the place is that the dynamics of partisan politics here often have nothing to do with national politics.  Democrats have been shut out of Gracie Mansion for 20 years in part because of the perception (much of it based in truth) that they are a corrupt, insular, graft-ridden organization, completely out of touch with their own natural constituency and incapable of speaking for them.  Democrats in the state legislature (and in the Governor's office) are doing their damnedest to perpetuate that perception;  for now, city Dems seem to have shaken it off.  Still, DeBlasio's primary win was a slap in the face to the city's Republicrat establishment.

Shirley Chisholm was right. Our Republic is in deep trouble.

away for 10 years, came back last year, so I'm still getting used to the place again. I'm well aware of the shadow of Tammany Hall here to this day. It's a machine politics place, like Chicago, Boston or NJ. But low turnout is low turnout and I'm concerned about 2014. Often the same people who want a change don't bother to vote, expecting someone else to make it happen.
