  •  My daughter who is disabled due to a rare (7+ / 0-)

condition in her 'lower left quandrant' has a mess of a left leg - lots of veins, scars, swelling.  One substitute gym teacher, who she asked if she could go change into her 'street clothes' cuz she had too much pain to participate that day, looked at her, looked at her leg and said 'yes, please, i'm going to be sick if i have to look at that any longer'

    yes, that is about verbatim.

i was shaking through the phone calls i made to the school principal and others, and the meeting, where i had highlighted sections of their school handbook - things like respect, integrity, etc. - words that would actually be displayed each month all around our town!

i was so livid.  the idiot called our home - i really did not wish to speak to her, nor did my daughter.  she apologized to me to which i told her i was not the one she owed an apology.

this was in high school.  all during my daughter's education i could have had her excused from gym, but encouraged her to participate when able, or do scoring or equipment otherwise.  This approach to her disability served her well in many ways.  Many years teachers were great, other years she spent many hours writing stupid papers about sport rules that she had already covered many times.

anyway, the sub was spoken to, i don't think disciplined though.  she apologized, in tears, in person to my daughter - something about her weak stomach.  she actually sounded a bit whacky.

yes, there are all kinds of teachers out there.  thank goodness most that my daughter had were wonderful (one other art teacher in high school would severely ridicule everyone's work in front of the class - my daughter had loved art till then, and never took it again because this teacher taught several classes)

do follow through letting the administration know what happened, and make sure the teacher is addressed about it.  if nothing else, it will at least make this one bad apple watch his/her step.
