Call the LWR situation a Betamax Fail if you want, because the same thing happened when Sony declined to license OEMs to produce VCRs using its superior format while everyone & his brother was building ones for VHS: As prices fell on the VHS units, Betamax sales withered, fewer videos were made to take advantage of Betamax, so fewer customers bought Sony's units, & the technology died.

The essential point remains: Inferior technology crowded better possibilities out of the marketplace.

(The sad part is that the only reason we have enough data to establish the potential of an MSR is also US military funding: the Air Force wanted to build a nuclear-powered bomber, which demanded a compact & relatively light reactor running at high temperatures.)

And pardon me for getting the details of LOCA wrong--my degrees are not in nuclear engineering. The essential point remains: LWR technology is not passively safe--it requires active intervention to prevent catastrophic failure such as occurred at Fukushima.

The greatest trick the GOP ever played was convincing the devil they had a soul to sell.

    •  Yes your point is correct (0+ / 0-)

I'm not sure any reactor design can be completely passively safe because of the decay heat removal issue.  Maybe if you put it under a waterfall or something.

Many Gen III designs incorporate passive safety features such as make-up tanks that feed emergency water to the core by gravity should a coolant loss occur (removing the immediate need for pumps and offsite/diesel power).

Didn't know that about the nuclear powered bomber.  It could practically eliminate the range issue by staying aloft for weeks.

First they came for the slippery-slope fallacists, and I said nothing. The End.
