  •  You still have the same freedom (8+ / 0-)

WordPress is basically just some PHP code that pulls together various HTML template files to display a website. There's some advantage in having a modular approach - it doesn't make sense to repeat the same header on 30 static HTML pages when you can just have a header file that can be edited in one place.

The security issue is a valid one but it's not because of any inherent flaw in WordPress. WordPress just tends to get targeted because it's the most popular CMS. As long as you take a few basic security measures, you should be totally fine.

"holes" in WordPress (they aren't like the security holes of say Java or IE!). Mostly they are user error: stupid passwords, not changing your login from the default "admin" (duh) and some other stuff.

If you like simple, you can build your own simple theme and not have the bells + that you don't want.

released. The dev team at WP is pretty on top of this stuff. They have a huge user base (many without a clue) so it not only gets tested, but it is an easy target for folks with bad intentions.

      •  Yeah I'm definitely talking about building (2+ / 0-)

your own theme. A preexisting theme isn't a horrible option for someone with limited web skills or who is just starting out, but I find that they are generally overloaded with extra features that aren't necessary.

but I understand why it is there. I was playing around with some sandbox themes and jeez louise! Simple they are not. It is true that you can do anything you want with them, but it's a lot like having a swiss army knife that also has garden tools and welding supplies and surgical instruments on it too.
