    But I also think that there are many hidden costs associated with NOT upgrading stuff. A lot of times they get ignored because of inertia, until they get so enormous that the problem can't be ignored. That's just human nature.

    So I would argue that while the cost of upgrading stuff can be huge, people often don't weigh the relative costs realistically or accurately.

      And the bean-counters usually don't take those costs into account because they don't show up as obviously (or require a large outlay of cash!)
