another persons artwork and use it in your book without permission.  I am sure instances vary, but you need to get a good lawyer, one who works with authors, to advise you. Otherwise you can be sued.

You can not assume that people will not be upset if you use their stuff without getting their permission.

And why would you not ask their permission?

One would have to see it to evaluate it, and that needs to be done by a copyright expert - but I am not getting the art of the artists website - these are often generally disseminated pictures, in the public domain, that can be be found in multiple places.

But I am more concerned by people with deep pockets.

      •  how do you know it's in the public domain? (0+ / 0-)

initially you said there were copyright problems.  You need to surrender to the need to get permission and make a project of it.  Why are you resisting?

If you are concerned with big money getting after you, that big money can buy up some of those copyrights and use that to come after you.

The purpose of the diary is to get expert personalized opinions. You can not make judgments with out context or pertinent expertise, and with out me going into some details about how much further research is feasable - because I can guarantee you that in many instances copyright would not be an issue.
