One alternative to the red British Legion poppies are the white ones supplied by the Peace Pledge Union:

Remembrance Day serves several functions, one of which is that it reinforces the message that sees war as 'natural' in western culture. Remembering War challenges this idea, and, in doing so, provides significant material for the general reader and student alike.
To be fair, for once the churches have progressed from the pure glorification to a more reasonable tone. The joint liturgy devised by a number for the service on Remebrance Sunday includes:
We meet in the presence of God.

We commit ourselves to work in penitence and faith for reconciliation between the nations, that all people may, together, live in freedom, justice and peace.

We will work, we will play, we will laugh, we will live. We will not waste one moment, nor sacrifice one bit of our freedom, because of fear.
