That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --

    •  Not at all. (0+ / 0-)

Those who reject it as cowardice and those who accept it as realism.

(I hope that was neutrally phrased.)

      •  Then there are those who reject "realpolitik" as (0+ / 0-)

the fantasy of might makes right. There are a lot more tools in the box than any pretense of force.

If you want reality in politics, you have to take a strategic view of a series of elections, not just what is possible with the current Congress. That means, on our side, taking maximum advantage of demographic and generational shifts by maximizing education, outreach, and GOTV. It isn't as hard as it is sometimes made out to be when your opponent misses no chance to insult and even injure every segment of the electorate, including itself.

But even with the current Congress, you have to recognize that there are multiple sources of power, and we have been underutilizing some of ours. We should be threatening filibuster reform in the Senate and Discharge Petitions in the House rather more frequently, for example. But we cannot push beyond the whip counts in either body. As long as the likes of Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Carl Levin (D-MI) refuse to support the talking filibuster, and accept unlimited holds, we can do nothing about the holds. So that shows us the pressure points we need to address.

We should also be laughing even louder at the antics and the fantasies of the Right. Sometimes even the MSM has to take notice, as with Rand Paul's plagiarism, which has proved to be too much even for the Washington Times.
