How much more do they need?

      I don't shop there, ever.

But also -- Wal-Mart relies on government to help it dominate retail markets to exclusion, to give it favorable deals on taxes and land use, and to subsidize the costs of its underpaid workforce.

We need to pressure governments to stop giving preferential treatment to this company over local businesses. We need to stop the tax breaks, the incentives and the subsidize.

We should raise the minimum wage, have stronger laws about how full and part-time work is structured, enforce laws about labor conditions and make it easier for workers to organize.

      •  I don't shop there either, but (2+ / 0-)

a lot of my underpaid, teacher friends do. It's a vicious circle.

It is ridiculous to pretend that firing teachers based on student test scores, starting charter schools, giving out vouchers or implementing merit pay will overcome the challenges facing a child living in poverty. -Jersey Jazzman

don't see where they're that much cheaper. At least in my neck of the woods.

We also have a plethora of Dollar Store, Family Dollar, Big Lots etc. I've had the chance to compare a few times (don't go in Wal Mart very often) and the exact same items were always $1-$3 more.

But has anyone seen Wally's newest ad? It started showing up a couple days ago here. It repeats the same old tripe about how even part time "associates" can rocket to the top. Then one actress says "my company gives me health insurance starting at $40 a month!" Notice she doesn't say $40 a month is what she pays - it "starts" at $40 a month. I can't recall all the other outrageous BS , but it's obvious these mini strikes and diaries like this are having an impact.

          Pour it on!
