I should wear some sun-glasses at least too. It only takes one wood chip to stop your progress for a half-hour.

a notch right where the saw bandwidth is - hearing loss only from running the saw. Please wear the hearing protection, as they don't make really good hearing aids yet.

      Holy shit!

You can buy those soft foam earplugs that go in your ear and expand to seal out noise.  I find them more comfortable when using a chainsaw.  Please do something though, you'll be glad you did 20 years from now.

A friend of my is a physical therapist who works with a lot of professional chainsaw operators.  The one's who didn't wear ear protection are easy to identify, they're deaf as tree stumps.

my dad loves them, he can put them in his ears in about 5 seconds flat (machinist for 20+ years).  It takes me 5 minutes, and they never fit quite right.  My ear canals must be smaller or something.

If I was a professional sawyer, then yes - ear protection would be a must.  As it is, I usually only cut and split 5-8 cords a year.  So not a huge amount of time with a saw.  If my ears were ringing when I got done cutting a tree, I would think differently....not too worried.

Gotta remember to start wearing the over the ear protection more often - I've been doing it more often  with that loud diesel tractor - after 4+ consecutive hours in the seat at 2000 rpm, my head (or lack of a headache) usually thanks me.
