  •  Difference between handgun and a rifle. (4+ / 0-)

When I was young and would go hunting with friends or my step father , I never  saw anyone wear ear protection  (except from cold) or eye protection when hunting with shotguns or long rifles.

A Handgun is a whole different deal than a long rifle though. I bought a handgun for protection in the 80s and immediately noticed indoors or out you needed ear protection at the bare minimum. Even a .22 Magnum handgun would blow your ears out. A 9 mm was even worse. The more grains of gunpowder , the louder the sound.

A handgun has a very short barrel. The super loud
"crack"  is from the bullet breaking the sound barrier as it leaves the barrel plus the gun powder. It happens as one loud bang

One could probably fire subsonic rounds from a handgun without protection. Sound suppressors work perfectly with sub sonic rounds. You only here a click of the hammer hitting the round. It's very quiet. I always thought a silencer was against the law. Surprise!

Gunpowder + length of barrel +/- environment determines need.

In the image above, that could have been me when I was a teen-ager.  I saved my dog from a feral pack with one hip shot in the air with a shotgun off the front porch.
