    A row of 8 switches to set the bits and some others to accept/run/whatever would seem to be a precursor, no? All combined with open-frame latching relays that would occasionally fall prey to producing a false bit when flying insects were trapped between the contacts, leading to the term  "bugs", and "de-bugging"...

    Output on 8 incandescent lights, one bit at a time...

    Aside from the relays, that was the method used on the first of the "personal computer" kits, way after cards of course.
