    Also, I think the "ordinary schoolgirl who discovers she has magical powers" archetype in manga and anime is a manifestation of the diarist's kind of delusional optimism among a segment of Japanese society (female children, adolescents, and young adults) who traditionally didn't have much say over their lives or much of anything outside the conventional to look forward to.

    The German "anti-dogmatic Left" or "Sponti" movement had a saying: "Du hast keine Chance, darum nutze sie!" One possible translation would be: "You don't stand a chance, so go for it!"
