  •  Malachite: what you consider wow (7+ / 0-)

a designer might not, and vice versa.

I might suggest you consider the palette in the space.
Darker colors shrink rooms, lighter ones enlarge them (duh).
Some colors are better over the long-term in natural light than others.

Our house is a '57 classic that's been amended and modded and is now in need of some ... well, really, an overhaul. My SO wants to get rid of the rough plaster in the room that serves as family room/ office.
I'm down with that. I'm sick to death of the dark paneling in the bedrooms and hallway (hallway? yeah, I did say it was a '57 house, right?) and we need some serious work in the bathroom; part of that is set for later today, in fact.

I really want to go Southwestern colors ... soft blues, turquoises, corals. The cats have used the corners as scratching posts and worn through trim boards / doorframes in their 17+ year tenure, and the shellacked knotty-pine and screaming-orange Formica in the kitchen is not just dated, it's depressing. Also, there's one more dog-barf-colored tile panel that, IMO, needs to go. away.
