is that often these are the same people who claim to be victimized whenever they are criticized for expressing hateful attitudes and committing violent acts against LGBT individuals.  Often the "freedom of speech/religion" card is played.   Not saying that is what this woman is doing (she may just be unable to see her son as anything but her pride and joy), but imagine if her son had been suspended from school from bullying an LGBT youth. How often have we heard parents of such kids claim that they are the "real victims" rather than the bullied or abused individual?

Fortunately, I find that fewer and fewer people, especially young people accept that "excuse" form bad and often criminal behavior. In my teen years (70's) kids were often beaten or abused if they were deemed "Queers" or "Fags" and the abusers routinely were given a pass by the adults - police, school administrators, even teachers.  I distinctly remember on shop teacher who told us when class started that he better not find out that any of us were "pansies" or he'd kick our ass and remove us from his class.  And most kids applauded him whether because they felt that was the right thing to do or because they didn't want to be seen as not being macho enough.  I know we had gay kids in school back then, but no one dared identify as one because of teachers like this guy.

At least at the high schools where my kids "matriculated" LGBT were accepted by the majority of their peers and adult staff.  Maybe they were lucky, but I like to think things have changed a lot for many LGBT kids across the country from the bad old days of my youth.
