  •  RIP Gene Farley - Progressive Champion (8+ / 0-)

Progressive Activist Gene Farley passed away this weekend at the age of 86.  During the recalls while I was working the elections Gene Farley chose to be an election observor, and he picked the Town of Madison City Hall location to do so.  During down time I was able to talk with Gene about events he and his late wife Linda were involved with.  Farley almost ran for the House (I think this was 1995/96) when the Democrats were having problems finding a challenger to then incumbent Scott Klug - R, who had defeated long time Representative Robert Kastenmeier 6 years prior, and crushed Ada Deer and Tom Hecht in the following two electons.  Without looking it up to confirm events, I believe this was the election where Paul Soglin, the past, and future, and current, and seemingly eternal, Mayor of Madison eventually ran at which point Gene gratefully withdrew as a candidate.  Klug went on to defeat Soglin in the 1996 House elections.  Tammy Baldwin followed Klug in this seat two years later when Klug stood down and she won a contested Democratic primary filled with significant challengers.  I was well aware of Gene Farley's accomplishments when I talked with him and am grateful for the opportunity to spend that day with Gene.  RIP.
