    what we've done to the country these past 40 years.

    Until about 10 years after that minimum wage peak, American worker productivity and median income had tracked together for most of our history.

    Once we began liberating the rich and deregulating business in 1981, productivity continued its upward climb, while median incomes flattened out. Workers have not shared the benefits of their increased productivity since Carter left office.

    If we set the minimum wage to where that $10.71 would be today if at the same ratio to productivity back then, minimum wage would be far higher, into the $20 an hour range today.
