  •  You would think for someone who earns... (26+ / 0-)

a living through writing that he would have a bigger vocab at his disposal.

Hey, Dick -- and can I call you Dick? -- here, off the top of my head, are a few other ways you could have gone...

    "People with outdated views..."

    "People with racist views..."

"People with trapped-in-amber, Pleistocene Era views..."

See, Dick? That wasn't so difficult, was it?

    •  Well, his friends call him Dick (8+ / 0-)

but I'm guessing not in the same way.  Besides Sally Quinn, Ken Auletta calls him Dick -- alot -- but in a nice way.  From one of Dick's previous forays into assholedom when he was harassing a young intern.

Sources close to Mr. Cohen and Ms. Spurgeon said neither is particularly pleased with the outcome. Mr. Cohen feels he has been the victim of a witch-hunt atmosphere. “It’s not like he groped someone,” said Mr. Auletta. “He’s being accused of saying things that are insensitive. Well, grow up.… This is Dick Cohen being Dick Cohen, and politically correct people being wusses.” Mr. Auletta expressed concern that recent press reports about the dispute might taint his friend’s reputation. “If you accuse someone of being a sexual harasser or a racist or an anti-Semite, the reporting never catches up with the story,” he said. “The charges are always so damaging.” Colleagues said both Mr. Cohen and Ms. Spurgeon feel the Post management’s public silence on the matter has prolonged the ordeal and only damaged them further.

Reminder to self -- further reading of Auletta requires screwing in my jaundiced eye.

        I Googled "Devon Spurgeon."

From your link, I get the feeling she endured a good bit of unnecessary hell from Dick Cohen.

But it eventually turned out pretty well for her:

        She wins.

I'd be really embarrassed for him. Like the time many decades ago that my dear old aunt said something like "The shiksas want those black men because they're so oversexed and EVEN some Jewish girls go for them!" and everyone was quiet and the subject was quickly changed as there was no point making her feel bad.

But for Cohen to think there is anything "conventional" about wanting to retch at the sight of mixed race children in 2013 can only be explained in one way. Also, my aunt would have NEVER said something that stupid and cruel, probably because even with her somewhat limited education and opportunities, she was much less racist than Richard Cohen.

He's a (purportedly) respectable professional writer, not somebody's dumbass grandpa who's had a few too many glasses of punch with Thanksgiving dinner.
