pile on, I can take it.

It sounded to me like he was ridiculing extremists.

His main issue is that he used the word "conventional", implying that mixed race marriages were not conventional.

I dont know enough of his history to add that to the equation.

But I did at first glance think he was ridiculing extremism.

    •  Not just "conventional." (7+ / 0-)

The gagging part is also the kind of wording that is so specific and unusual in this context that it comes across as personal. If he'd said "People with deeply conservative views must be disturbed..." we wouldn't be talking about it. But conventional and gag reflex are pretty potent. Especially for someone with his decades-long history on this front.

    •  He was definitely deflecting those supposed views (5+ / 0-)

      onto persons other than himself.

But it wasn't only that he dignified those other persons with the description "conventional" as opposed to "benighted" or "die-hard segregationists" or whatever.

It was also choosing the term "gag-worthy".   To me, to invoke the gag reflex is alarmingly extreme because it expresses a truly gut-level loathing.  He could have talked about "suppressing a double-take" and still made the point that a few retrograde folks still haven't gotten used to interracial marriage.  Without being QUITE so offensive.

In other words, not only did he give a somewhate friendly description of extremists, but he did it WHILE emphasizing the intense degree of their extremism.

    •  Whatever he was doing (0+ / 0-)

he clearly cannot write very well.

Because he keeps ending up in the same place.

You say that as if it's some sort of minor nitpick. It's like saying "His main issue with the electrician is that he wired the 120V mains with doorbell wire" or "His main issue with the doctor is that he left a dozen sponges and two scalpels inside the patient".

On the Internet, nobody knows if you're a dog... but everybody knows if you're a jackass.
