  •  Exactly. (13+ / 0-)

Nothing about Cohen's "explanation" makes sense. As I understand it, he's saying that he was "talking about Tea Party extremism" and that's why he's not racist.

Next question for Richard Cohen: do you think that gagging over a photo of an interracial family is a racist reaction? Yes? Then contrary to the assertion in your column, you are saying that the GOP/Tea Party (indistinguishable) is racist. No, you don't think it's a racist reaction? Then you are racist.

There's no third option. In which way would you like to proceed?

Despite the best efforts of lots of people -- here and on other sites, including comments to WaPo -- the only fair reading of his piece is that he was talking about (his sense of) others' views, not his own. So, that part of his explanation makes sense. The "outrage" over that is typical of the ginned up crap that proliferates in the blogosphere, both right and left.

I'd say that it's not fair to say that the GOP and Tea Party are indistinguishable. The latter is a subset of the former. That was the underlying assumption of the piece, and it's true. However, it's bizarre that he portrays cultural conservatives as having this racist reaction and yet says they're not racist. Defies common sense. He offends these folks by implying they're racist and then offends logic by saying they're not racist.

      •  Prove to me how the Republican (0+ / 0-)

Party doesn't ascribe to the TP POV. By using vote counts, if you will, which is where the rhetorical rubber meets the reality road. If you can do that, then your point about Cohen's distinctions is meaningful. If not, then not.
