  •  Thanks so much- (4+ / 0-)

As a complete novice,I would definitely appreciate your advice and tips. Your generosity in helping other writers is greatly appreciated.

How would you handle a pen name?

Perhaps if you tackled it sequentially - starting with the assumption you have completed something you would like to put out there and then going from Step 1 to Step 2, etc.

I have a collection of short stories I would like to publish - how would you suggest I get started? Release one at a time to build readership? How would you price a short story?

Pen names are easy, if you're selling on Amazon - you choose the author name when you set up your book. I'm planning a series of financial books and I'll be using a pen name for them so that they don't get confused with my technical books. (I'm already kind of using one - if you look at the two books I linked to, the healthcare book uses my full name, which I reserve for academic and technical writing, while the amazon book doesn't, and they don't link to each other; so far the healthcare book is the only thing other than journal articles I've put my full name on)

Short stories I would price at 99c each, but if you have a number of them written already I would release the first three at once, then at the end put a "Check out these other stories by this author" link page. This serves several purposes - if people like the book they're likely to download another one, and people are more likely to download the book in the first place if they see that there are more available.

Then release at least one a month to get your readers in the habit of checking back; once they're all up there (or a good number), release a 'collection' book that's cheaper than buying them all separately so that somebody who buys one can just go ahead and get the whole collection at a discount (but be sure to mention on the Amazon page that the contents are the same as X,Y,Z stories).
