  •  I am not sure this is the whole story (4+ / 0-)

I remember there being people we were told to stay away from, and places we should not go alone, and there was such a presence of people observing that I do not think is the same today.     Most of the things that I remember happening were family-connected, or someone that was trusted.    It did not mean that you had to shut yourself away,

    •  I like to say that we had (5+ / 0-)

Neighborhood Watch before Neighborhood Watch was cool -- we had Mrs. B. who was always at her kitchen sink doing dishes or making dinner, and that window looked out on many of the houses across the street from the house, where us neighborhood girls would be playing tag or jumping over the neighbor's hedges (he kept them low so it would be easier for us -- as we got older and stopped the jumping activities he let them grow taller) or roller skating on my house's driveway (we had the longest driveway so it was the best for skating). She was one of the few moms in the neighborhood who didn't work outside the home, so she was there to watch us.
