Push for legalization of marijuana in each state and demand that those who are in prison for possession and sale be released immediately and you would loose about 10 to 15 percent of the inmates. Push for the end of racial profiling and the prison population could drop by one third to one half or more.

The big issue here of course as pointed by the TV program is free or extremely cheap labor costs are why this thing happens. Call it corporate slavery (as opposed to below living standard wage slavery, i.e. what McDonalds and Wal Mart practices). What to do with the empty space in prisons if the above changes took place? Well, I have a list of people we could use to fill them back up: George Bush, Dick Chaney, Don Rumsfeldt, Jamie Dimon (and basically the heads of most major U.S. banks), The Koch brothers, Roger Ailes, Rupert Murdoch, all heads of military weapons manufacturers and distribution corporations who have gotten wars started for profit, a lot of people from the intelligence community, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Michelle Bachmann, the heads of the major fossil fuel corporations, pretty much any Tea Party politician, the bulk of GOP members of the House and Senate, any millionaire or billionaire who has made life hard for the working class to gain more personal profit and any Democrat politician who has put the interest of their puppet master over that of the common person just to name a few. And the criminal charges for these people? Changing this country from a democratic republic to a plutocratic oligarchy and forgetting or ignoring the golden rule that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one.
