  •  1946, It Was Probably Well Along In Production (7+ / 0-)

when the war was still on. Not really the time to expect a realistic presentation. And because of the Cold War and Korea, we wouldn't see any realistic presentation of war for many many years to come.

And most of the western genre of the subsequent 2 decades would be thinly disguised WW2 dramas of the same idealistic nature. Streets with no dung and death always instantaneous with no blood.

Amazing that a generation raised steeped in all this turned out so many young war resisters.

    •  Saving Private Ryan was just as bad (4+ / 0-)

Guys strolling all over the hills, bunched up, yakking like they were on a picnic, smarting off to the looey.  The  movie advisor was Steven Ambrose, not a combat vet
Shut the fuck up in a war and keep your eyes open if you know whats good for you.

Our generation grew up in different times than our parents did. We grew up in a time of plenty, they had severe hardships.  We had more leisure and affluence  to do what we wanted, they were much more constricted.

      •  Whole premise of Savig Private Ryan was phoney (5+ / 0-)

That was actually based on somewhat of a true story---a guys two brothers were killed and he was taken out of combat.
But the notion that they're going to send a squad of men to find him while they're consolidating forces after D-Day---preposterous!  They would have sent a message down the chain of command---that IS what happened in this case but it doesn't make such a good story
