"Greater than ourselves" is total nonsense. It doesn't add anything to the conversation except confusion.

    * [new]  Well we know some things (1+ / 0-)
     that are beyond ourselves
that are totally amazing and require no gods.
Biology and physics come to mind.
Explain to me how the stricken text adds anything to the statement. Just read the statement without the nonsense and it is much clearer what you mean.

Phrases like "bigger than ourselves" just add nonsense and lack of clarity.

You haven't asked a question yet, or even made a meaningful statement in words that can be commonly understood.

My contention is that phrases like "greater than ourselves" are useless because they cannot be easily defined and no one knows what the fuck you are talking about when you say them.

That's why I ask you to repeat your statement/question without using the confusing words so we can speak the same language. So far as far as I can tell, you have not done so, so we sit at the same impasse.

But don't pretend that the problem here is me and my intransigence. I'm merely asking you to repeat your contention, whatever it is, using commonly understood words and concepts.

It's the title to my diary.  It's the question that I am asking.  It's a personal question.  One I have been asking myself for over 20 years.

It's all right there right at the start of the diary.

I said that I think I might have answered the question for myself.  I shared the experience.  I explained some of the thoughts I had.  I ended the diary saying "just some thoughts".

What do you want?  For me to claim I actually know the definitive answer to a question that has been pondered over for thousands of years?

The best answer I have is that people believe in god, because it meets a need and I can't dismiss it because I care about people and I want their needs to be met.

I don't know what's so fucking hard to understand about that?

And I don't know why anyone here can't handle an atheist saying that they can't dismiss other people's belief in god.  Is atheist a fucking cult and nobody told me?
