    or whatever they may call them -- go to the Tourist Info Centre and pay for a local guide/docent tour. I've always found them well worth the cost. I'd do that the first day, as kind of an orientation. I was only there once, decades ago, but we did some sort of night-time tour of the High Street that included all the murder stories and other weird lurking-in-shadows stuff -- not usually my thing but a nice change from the fancy-people-on-horseback-and-in-their-fancy-houses tours. That was in the summer so I don't know what will be available at this time of year.

    I'm a fan of pub food, like jacket potatoes, rather than fancy restaurants, and you're much more likely to meet locals. The local youth hostel is likely to have a bulletin board full of interesting things to do, possibly even coupons for discounts and/or some guided events.
