  •  Having worked for a power company . . . (13+ / 0-)

I am convinced we'd be a whole lot better off if we were to Nationalize the entire grid and every generator and run it as a not-for-profit enterprise.   Combined utilities -- electricity and natural gas -- will gouge you on gas prices and delivery infrastructure so they can use natural gas to generate electricity, thereby throwing two-thirds of the energy in the gas away as wasted heat.
Natural gas delivers three times the energy at half the cost as electricity to customers.
The better option for solar customers is to install storage batteries (an old electric fork-truck battery is ideal) and drop off the grid entirely.  Screw "net billing".  Move over to "no billing".  And tell the electric company to come out and remove their meter and service entry cable from your house and get the pole out of the corner of your yard.

    •  The UK had that (5+ / 0-)

It was called the CEGB (Central Electricity Generating Board).

It was so successful that Margret Thatcher sold it to the enormous profit of some large energy corporations.

Currently the UK is going through energy price hikes that they simply cannot bear, and Labour is threatening a price freeze.

I hope that the quality of debate will improve,
but I fear we will remain Democrats.

the same argument could be made that you benefit from the electric grid around you and must pay for it even if disconnected.

If connected but using net zero energy monthly there is some small logic that the ability should be paid for in a way..and as to taxes and local prices you do, so...

      1. would it be allowed by the building code in cities

      2. would you have to pay anyway...?

      This machine kills Fascists.
