    I like the idea of simply deducting the difference, essentially raising the subsidy. But it should not be for the more expensive policies insurers up-sold people to outside the exchange, their "dumbshit" premiums.

    But if you buy on the exchange and it is more expensive than what you had, you can deduct the difference when you do your taxes.

      individual policy almost surely didn't cover pre-existing conditions.  With the games insurance companies play with "pre-existing conditions," insurance that doesn't cover pre-existing conditions is no insurance at all.  And keep in mind that if something isn't covered, the money you pay for it out-of-pocket doesn't count toward your out-of-pocket maximum.
