Dawkins is to atheism as Rand is to personal responsibility (not an original but rather apt)

that people who are in favor of marriage equality for gay couples would have something against polygamy. Consenting adults are consenting adults are consenting adults.

This is totally aside from the child marriage issues within the FLDS, which is an abhorrent practice, and even the women above 18 in the most extreme sects who marry are generally coerced, not consenting. They aren't making a choice if they are intentionally kept ignorant of their choices and human rights, but I digress...

I have some non-religious polyamorous friends that I've known for a very long time. Once the novelty wears off, you realize these people are no different than the rest of us - they want to be recognized for who they are, they want to be in a family, and they just want to live their lives without the morality police dictating what they can do in their own homes.

The more people get to know gay couples, the more they realize these desires are universal. This is true for polyamorous and polygamous arrangements as well.

People say "but the messy tax benefits and inheritances!" - all we have to do is stop giving tax benefits to married couples and problem 1 is solved. As for problem 2, these issues tend to be well sorted out by the individuals involved through their wills, well ahead of time.

Also, if polygamy is fully legalized, the large-scale tax fraud committed by the FLDS will be forced to cease, ending a decades-long multi-billion-dollar black hole the U.S. government has been throwing money into. You can't claim to be a single mother if your polygamous relationship is registered with the state and federal governments.

      •  I guess what I want to see is that women (0+ / 0-)

can have several men then. What I don't like it the outdated macho style behind all this.

        •  you'd like my older sister's relationship. (0+ / 0-)

She's married to a guy, she has a boyfriend on the side, and a couple friends with bennies as well. Her husband has a girlfriend on the side as well. We had the whole clan over for thanksgiving,  it went down with my in-laws like a lead Hindenburg, but tough, my house my rules.
