    and this author describes it perfectly.  I especially appreciated some of the female-specific peculiarities, and her 'can't look good enough to get the job' I found particularly poignant and apt.  'Looking right', for women, includes additional expenses that men do't have to pay out:  makeup, hair styling and its products, pantyhose (which may cost the same as socks, pair-for-pair, but men's socks last forever while panty hose can be ruined the first day).

    Another reminder of what being poor is really like is John Scalzi's phenomenal 2005 post, 'Being Poor'.  Be sure to read the comments -- all of them.

      easier to overcome the gender bias than it was to overcome the lack of wardrobe, makeup and cliquish behaviors required for most office jobs. Once I managed to get my nursing degree that became moot, but up til then...
