  •  Thank you. I have long believed that the North (0+ / 0-)

Woods should be protected forever, as a monument it would not get the funding or prestige of Acadia, but it would be another reason to visit Maine. At 10 million  that's about 95% of Maine's portion of the forest, and it would be the largest monument in the lower 48.  yes it would basically mean the northern half of the state is set aside, but that area is unincorporated anyway.  put a number of headquarters in various areas, which will bring in local folks

and the Maine Woods are a treasure. But they're also an important part of the economy here. It's a delicate balance.

for a national Forest, since unlike the NPS mission of preservation and strict conservation, a national forest allows  multiple useage. its in Agriculture rather than Interior. Although if I had my druthers, Parks, Forests and Fish and Wildlife would be in the same department- Conservation. FDR proposed creating  a Department of Conservation in 1936 that would have merged Forests with the Parks, but Congress said no.

is under federal management or ownership. Almost all the land in Maine is privately owned.

        Think about that a bit.

Efforts to create a new national park here of just 75,000 acres have created a turmoil - and this proposal would be to turn land owned by an individual (Roxanne Quimby) over to federal management. A quit claim.

Bellows has many positions that differ strongly from those held by Collins. Let's focus on those.
