Let's all get behind Van Hollen.  He's got the right idea.

    •  Infrastructure lip service or a serious proposal? (5+ / 0-)

Infrastructure is 3.6 trillion in the hole. (6% of GDP)  900 billion each year for 4 years. that would create 22 million jobs and fill that hole - the additional FICA would ensure SS solvency thru 2090.

      50 billion.....

      •  I don't expect THAT kind of scale (0+ / 0-)

until/unless we control both chambers of Congress. If we can get SOMETHING in infrastructure, we should. But we should make infrastructure (as much of green as possible) a major campaign focus in '14 and '16 and be very frank about how much it will cost and what jobs it will create, etc.

energy grid with that infrastructure project and then we are really talking.

The biggest energy using country on the planet with a criminally inefficient grid, no other individual improvement project in the world would have a greater positive impact on global energy.

It would create so many jobs, save so much money, and possibly even stem the tide of climate change.

...But the bridges not falling into the water thing is cool too  let's do both :)

        •  Yup, HVDC for long distance transmission (0+ / 0-)

is far more efficient than AC transmission. All of the offshore wind projects include HVDC marine power cables, like the 360 mile long Atlantic Wind Connection, NJ to Virginia, will support 1700, 4mw turbines.

Super Grid and Smart Grid means jobs and the ability to move renewable energy from wheres its generated to where its needed with increased efficiency.

Super & Smart Grid proposals can mean 400k to 500k jobs, long term, 25-40 years. The Offshore wind jobs pay very well, 85k to 120k.
